Dionne Newell, Senior Research Officer
(Entomologist)

Dionne
Newell joined the Institute of Jamaica in 1999 as the Senior
Research Officer (Entomology) in the Natural History Division
(NHD)with a mandate to preserve and maintain the national
zoological collections. Her duties include conducting research,
collecting specimens and curating the collections.
Dionne is currently enrolled in a Ph.D program at the University
of the West Indies (Mona) with a main focus on the taxonomy and
ecology of Jamaican Odonata, primarily the damselflies. She
successfully completed her M.Phil degree in Zoology in 2001.
Dionne was recently appointed as Jamaicas’ Focal Point for the
Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN). At a
recent IABIN meeting in Panama she was selected as IABIN
Caribbean lead with a responsibilty to coordinate the planning
activities for a possible Caribbean IABIN meeting. She is an
active member of the Jamaica Young Scientists’ Forum (JYSF) and
member of the Natural History Society of Jamaica (NHSJ).
Dionne has attended and represented Jamaica at IABIN Council
meetings in Mexico in 2003 and Panama in 2005.
